Diabetes

  • Cohort studies strongly support the food and nutrient components of plant-based diets in reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes.

  • Observational and interventional studies demonstrates the benefits of plant- based diets in treating type 2 diabetes and reducing key diabetes-related macrovascular and microvascular complications. (With excellent references.)

  1. Vegetarians showed about 40–60% reduction in risk of diabetes, compared with nonvegetarians. N=1200 (Chiu, Nature.com, Nutrition and Diabetes 2018)

2. 43% of the patients in the vegan group compared to 26% of patients in the ADA diet (2006) group were able to reduce their medications (weight loss correlated with reduced HbA1c). N=99 (Barnard et al, Diabetes Care 2006)

3. In the Diabetes Program Prevention Research Group study of 3200 patients, lifestyle interventions (diet, exercise) reduced the incidence by 58% of developing Type 2 diabetes, compared to placebo. (Ref. N Engl J Med. 2002)
