Hypertension

1. In the EPIC study, plant predominant diets were significantly and inversely associated with systolic and diastolic blood pressure. (N= 13,597) (Ref. Eur J Nutr 2019)

2. In the CARDIA study (N= 4304), the risk of EBPelevated blood pressure was positively associated with red and processed meat intake, whereas it was inversely associated with intakes of whole grain, fruit, nuts, and milk. (Ref. he American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2005)

3. In pooled data from Harvard’s 3 cohorts from the Nurses Health Studies and the Health Professionals Follow Up Study (combined N= 188,518), long term intake of meat and poultry was associated with increased risk of hypertension. Consumption of any animal flesh at least 1 serving/day was also associated with an increased risk of hypertension. (Ref. Willett W, J Hypertension 2015)
